Traders Point Creamery & the Slaughter of Mothers and Babies
A beautiful exploited cow at Traders Point Creamery destined for slaughter.
I have watched with sadness as friends and acquaintances talk about Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, IN and repeat typical buzz words like “organic”, “grass-fed”, “farm-to-table”, “humane” and “happy”. When I think of Traders Point, I typically think of words like “slaughter”, “veal” and “exploitation”.
So-called “humane” farms use similar marketing techniques to try to trick you into believing they have found the right way to do the wrong thing. Traders Point even takes part in the new trend of “agro-tourism” letting people pay money to tour their farm to show off their supposedly happy animals.
The Ugly Truth
In reality, the cows at Traders Point mostly meet the same fate as cows at other dairies. Consider:
- Mothers are repeatedly impregnated over the course of their entire lives so their milk production stays high.
- When they are no longer producing enough milk to be profitable, the mothers are sent to slaughter; the ultimate betrayal of trust after her body has been exploited for her entire life to produce milk and babies.
- The male calves are housed until they are ready to be shipped off and slaughtered for veal, or they are shipped away to other farms where they grow to early adolescence and are slaughtered for meat.
- The female calves await the same fate as their mothers, being exploited for what their bodies can produce until, like their mothers before them, they are shipped off to slaughter when they can no longer be profitable for the farm.
The Crime of Being Born a Cow
Humans have a natural appreciation and love for animals, as seen in the way most of us treat our domestic pets. Cows are gentle, lovable, peaceful animals. Anyone who has ever met a cow or a baby calf would most assuredly protect them from impending harm. But most people either don’t think about or don’t realize the harm that comes to animals because of our actions. Every time we purchase milk, cheese or meat we are engaging in actions that contribute to the lifelong exploitation of their bodies. Our actions at the grocery store literally convert them from a sweet, gentle, living being into an inanimate object that we purchase from a store. If these were dogs or cats, we would not allow it to happen. But these sweet souls had the misfortune of being born cows…animals we eat; rather than dogs or cats…animals we love.
What You Can Do
My guess is that many Traders Point customers are making an honest attempt to purchase products from a place that has higher standards of animal care. Most would agree that causing less harm is better than doing more harm. So if causing less harm is an admirable goal, why eat their bodies and secretions at all? There is a very attainable way we can cause no harm at all.
If you want to stop supporting the dairy industry because of the cruelty involved, there are many kinds of delicious, nutritious plant based milks available. Soy, almond, cashew, coconut, hemp, flax, pea protein and other types of plant milks are available at most local grocery stores. If you try one and don’t like it, try a different one. We promise you will find one you love!
